The Cape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana), also known as the golden berry, Chinese lantern, or husk cherry, is a vibrant fruit wrapped in a delicate, papery husk. As it ripens, the fruit transitions from a pale green to a rich amber or golden-orange colour, making it as visually striking as it is flavourful. Beneath the husk lies a small, glossy berry that delivers a distinctive taste experience.
Cape gooseberries are known for their bright, tangy flavour, which combines sweet and tart elements with a hint of citrus-like zest. Their refreshing piquant taste makes them a versatile fruit, used in both savoury and sweet dishes. The balance of acidity and sweetness in gooseberries is what makes them especially prized for jam, where their sharp, fruity notes can be preserved and enjoyed all year round.
Our Gooseberry Jam
At Nyanza Estates, our gooseberry jam is crafted to highlight the bold and vibrant flavour of these unique fruits. We handpick the finest gooseberries, ensuring that only the ripest, juiciest berries make it into our jam. By carefully selecting and preparing each berry, we maintain the natural tartness and rich texture that makes Cape gooseberries so distinctive.
Our gooseberry jam is made by combining gooseberries and sugar, slowly cooking them together to create a jam that is both tangy and sweet, with the bright citrusy notes of the fruit shining through. We cut the gooseberries into generous pieces, allowing the jam to have a chunky, satisfying texture that pairs beautifully with the jam’s refreshing flavour.
As with all our products, our gooseberry jam is made in small batches in our nut-free kitchens, using traditional methods in steam-jacketed stainless-steel pots. We never use artificial colours or flavours, focusing instead on the natural qualities of the fruit. The result is a jam that bursts with the authentic taste of fresh gooseberries, perfect for spreading on toast, adding to desserts, or pairing with savoury dishes.
