The Apricot
The apricot (Prunus armeniaca) is a delicate stone fruit that belongs to the genus Prunus, known for producing some of the world’s most beloved fruits. Apricots are small, rounded fruits with a smooth, velvety skin that glows in hues of golden orange, often kissed by a rosy blush depending on the variety. Their flesh is firm yet tender, and they have a single large stone at the centre, which easily separates from the fruit.
When young, apricots are firm and subtly sweet, but their true essence develops as they ripen. As they mature, apricots become juicier and more aromatic, offering a unique balance of sweetness with a hint of tartness. Their flavour is a vibrant mix of honeyed sweetness and a mildly tangy finish, delivering a soft, luscious mouthfeel. This makes apricots a favourite for fresh eating, baking, and of course, jam-making.

At Nyanza Estates, our apricot jam is a celebration of this golden fruit, carefully crafted to preserve its naturally sweet and tangy essence. Our apricots are sun-ripened in the cool mountain air of Juliasdale and are harvested at the peak of ripeness, ensuring that only the juiciest, most flavourful fruits make it into our jam.
Handpicked from our own orchards, we select only the finest apricots, meticulously inspecting each one to guarantee superior quality. To enhance the fruit’s natural character, we cut the apricots into chunky pieces, creating a jam that is rich in texture and bursting with flavour. Every spoonful of our apricot jam captures the essence of the fruit, with a delightful balance of sweetness and subtle tartness, complemented by the satisfying texture of real fruit chunks.
Our jam kitchens at Nyanza Estates are nut-free, and we take pride in crafting our jams without the use of artificial colours or flavours. We believe that the true beauty of our jams lies in the fruit itself, and our recipes are designed to highlight its natural texture and taste. Each batch of apricot jam is made in small quantities using traditional methods in steam-jacketed stainless-steel pots, allowing us to carefully control the process and produce a jam that is as authentic as it is delicious.
